About Obesity

Obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportions and has become one of the greatest medical challenges of our generation. According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control) research, more than 30% of the U.S. adult population is obese and more than two thirds of the population suffers from weight issues. The result of this staggering health problem has been an increase in type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. If left untreated, these health problems can lead to serious cardiac, respiratory or kidney disease, and even cancer.

Obesity itself is a disease with wide-ranging effects. Beyond physical health issues, obesity can cause significant psychological challenges. These problems include reduced social activity and difficulty performing enjoyable activities. Obesity presents an extremely expensive problem to society, employers and individuals. It is estimated that obesity costs the United States up to $147 billion every year. The cost to employers, according to a Duke University study, is over $73 billion every year among full-time employees. The cost to individuals may be between $2,500 and $4,800 every year depending on gender, according to a George Washington University study.

With obesity trends continuing to rise, weight loss surgery has become one of the most effective long-term options to control it and its related diseases. While prevention is the best way of controlling a disease, weight loss surgery is the only proven way to reverse obesity and its related health problems for long-term health and success.
