Paying for Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is not cheap. We know that one of the most common concerns when considering weight loss surgery is related to payment. That’s why the UC Health Weight Loss Center has a full-time financial counselor on staff to help you understand the various payment options that are available, including insurance coverage, payment plans and loans.

When you consider the financial, physical and emotional cost of a lifetime of obesity, it may put into perspective the relative value of weight loss surgery. Before surgery, many people spend upwards of $400 a month on medication to treat their obesity-related illnesses. For about $300 a month – the cost of a good car – you can change your life and eliminate the need for those expensive pills.

A recent George Washington University study illustrated that, on average, women who are obese spend an extra $4,800 or more a year on medications, groceries, doctor’s visits, and other weight-related expenses. Obese men spend more than $2,500 per year on obesity-related expenses. That means that if you applied all that extra expense to the cost of your surgery, you could pay off your procedure within just a few years.

In addition to the financial burdens you will eliminate over the long term through weight loss surgery, consider the extraordinary changes you will make in the quality of your life by losing weight. Many patients who have gone through weight loss surgery found that losing weight allowed them to return to work or find exciting new careers, spend more quality time with their loved ones, become physically active, and improved their overall mental health and wellbeing.

There are three options for paying for surgery:

  • Insurance is the most common payment method. Many insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, will cover weight loss surgery, depending on your plan.
  • If insurance is not an option for you, financing is available. Options may include loans from friends or family, collateralized loans such as a home loan or line of credit, or third-party medical financing from companies such as BLISPay. The UC Health Weight Loss Center is a BLIS-approved provider, which means that you will be eligible to receive financial assistance and additional, optional insurance from BLIS covering any complications that may arise from your procedure.  Learn more about financing options.
  • The third option is cash payment. Cash-pay patients have a great deal of flexibility both in qualifying for surgery and negotiating lower rates for their procedure.

Regardless of which option is used to pay for weight loss surgery, our patients overwhelmingly state that the decision to have weight loss surgery was worth the expense. To take the next step in your weight loss journey, contact our financial counselor for assistance.
