Band Over Bypass
Some patients experience weight regain after gastric bypass. The most common cause of weight regain or insufficient weight loss after a patient has received a gastric bypass procedure results from an over- stretching of the stomach pouch. Just like any muscle in the body, the stomach has the ability to stretch significantly, even after it has been reduced in size. This stretching can occur several years after surgery and is usually a result of the patient introducing a more liberal diet than the one prescribed after surgery. In this situation, the lowest risk procedure is the gastric band over bypass. Placing a band over the bypass addresses both of these issues and allows for renewed restriction. Often times, the restriction provided by the band over bypass may offer even better results than the original surgery.
How does it work? The band is placed at the top of the stomach pouch and tightened to restore restriction. This makes you feel full on a small amount of food and restores the main function of the original bypass. In essence, this creates an adjustable gastric bypass. As with every gastric banding system, the band is fully adjustable and can be tightened or loosened in order to increase or decrease restriction respectively.
