Groundbreaking Research for Better Patient Outcomes
The UC Metabolic Diseases Institute houses one of the largest obesity/diabetes research teams in the country. The Institute is supported by $8.8 million in NIH funding, making it one of the top 10 Institutes in the country for research. Our physicians participate in and lead several federally-funded research studies each year to further UC’s goal of improving quality of life for our patients and developing therapies to treat these debilitating diseases. Research highlights include:
In 2009, Randy Seeley, PhD, director of the UC Diabetes & Metabolic Disease Institute, was awarded the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award from the American Diabetes Association.
Diabetes Management Program Goes Hospital-Wide
DiabetesNow! was established at UC Health University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 2006 by a team of physicians, nurses and pharmacists to address a growing need for resources and education surrounding the care of diabetes and endocrinology inpatients. The program, one of the first of its kind nationally, is led by UC Health endocrinologist Mercedes Falciglia, MD. It offers intensive practitioner education and a protocol on insulin use, and establishes diabetes resource specialists for every unit in the hospital. This original program is just one example of the groundbreaking work that is being done by the UC Diabetes & Metabolic Disease Institute to improve patient care and treatment.
