UC Health Emergency Medicine is recognized as one of the best Emergency Medicine programs in the country. The Emergency Medicine training program, established by the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, was the first program of its kind when it was developed in 1970. All UC Health Emergency Medicine physicians are residency-trained in Emergency Medicine, a program that provides four additional years of specialty training.

UC Health Emergency Medicine at UC Health University Hospital is designated as the region’s only Level I trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. With a highly specialized emergency medicine team and the largest number of intensive care beds in the city, UC Health Emergency Medicine is equipped to treat the most complex cases – including victims of serious accidents and injuries. Our experienced physicians are recognized nationally as leaders in their field and are dedicated to providing outstanding patient care, exceeding the expectations of our referring physicians as well as our patients.

UC Health Emergency Medicine evaluates and treats over 150,000 patients annually at University Hospital, Jewish Hospital and our newest location, UC Health West Chester Hospital. At University Hospital alone, our Emergency Medicine physicians treat over 90,000 patients per year, the highest volume of adult emergency cases treated in any Cincinnati hospital.

Discovery Driven Medicine for Better Patient Outcomes

As faculty members at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, teaching and research are a large part of what sets UC Health Emergency Medicine apart from other practicing emergency departments. Clinical and basic science research is conducted across the entire spectrum of patients presenting to the emergency department, from ankle sprain to multiple trauma, from flu to pneumonia, and from headache to stroke. Research in emergency medicine often overlaps with other specialties and we enjoy strong collaborations with our UC Health colleagues in neurology, cardiology, trauma, and surgery, as well as with outpatient services and health policy and systems specialists.

Access to Advanced Emergency Care and Cutting Edge Diagnostics

UC Health Emergency Medicine understands the need for timely care in response to emergency situations. Our specially trained, board-certified physicians, nurses and other health care professionals are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, responding immediately to patients in need of emergency care. To improve the patient experience, UC Health offers:

  • Air Care & Mobile Care, performing more than 1,100 flights annually at University Hospital and West Chester Hospital
  • Burn Walk-In Center at University Hospital, providing fast, expert care to patients with minor burn injuries
  • Separate 24-hour Psychiatric and Social Service teams at University Hospital

Fast and Superior Access to Care Via Flight and Ground Transport

Air Care & Mobile Care (ACMC) is one of only five medical transport service programs in the nation to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS) in four separate levels of care. ACMC celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2009 and has successfully completed over 30,000 flight missions without a single accident.

Air Care has two aircrafts – one based at UC Health University Hospital, the other based at UC Health West Chester Hospital. Of approximately 400 flight programs in the U.S., Air Care is one of only seven to include a flight physician (a UC Health Emergency Medicine Physician) on every flight. Together, they combine for 1,100 flight missions per year, including scene responses and inter-facility transfers of critically ill or injured patients into our hospitals. Also, Air Care is the only flight program in the region with the capability to initiate blood transfusions in a pre-hospital environment, a procedure that can prove to be life-saving in a critical situation.

Partnering For a Healthier, Greater Cincinnati

As medical leaders in the community and experts of emergency medicine, UC Health Emergency Medicine physicians volunteer with the Cincinnati Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. In order to provide the best medical care possible while acting on behalf of the SWAT team, our physicians undergo the same physical and tactical training as SWAT police officers. Their role is to bring limited medical supplies to SWAT team rescues and perform lifesaving medical interventions on victims and SWAT members. They also monitor the overall health of the police officers, advising them on treatment and referring them to specialists when necessary.

In addition to helping the SWAT team on the scene, UC Health Emergency Medicine physicians have also conducted classes for the officers on first aid, how to evaluate hypothermia, and other medical issues.
