Revolutionary Stroke Care by Expert Physicians

The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team was founded as the first multidisciplinary stroke team in the U.S. in 1984.  Joseph Broderick, MD, UC Health neurologist and Chair of the Department of Neurology, serves as the current Director of the Stroke Team, which provides in-person on-site stroke evaluation for acute stroke therapy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The Stroke Team serves 15 regional hospitals and provides telephone consultations at more than 20 other regional hospitals.

The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team includes stroke neurologists, neurovascular surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, and neuroradiologists backed by a team of researchers and clinical and technical support staff.  Based at the University of Cincinnati and UC Health University Hospital, the Stroke Team serves as a community resource to all Greater Cincinnati hospitals, while managing the stroke treatment program at University Hospital.

Groundbreaking Research Leads to Discovery-Driven Care

UC Health Neurology physicians are faculty members and researchers at the University of Cincinnati, which allows them the opportunity to participate in revolutionary studies that will pave the way for new treatments for patients suffering from neurological disorders.  The University of Cincinnati is ranked in the top 10 for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for research in neurology and the majority of this research is patient-focused.  We are a leading organization in the United States for patient enrollment in clinical trials, which gives our patients the opportunity to try new treatments before they are widely available elsewhere.

Research & Clinical Trial Highlights

  • One of the main centers in the country for epilepsy research, led by Michael Privitera, MD – Dr. Privitera has been a leader in nearly every clinical trial for anti-convulsant medication
  • Nationally known for advancements and discoveries in acute stroke research and care – Joseph Broderick, MD, Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Cincinnati, and several other physicians have been instrumental in acute stroke research.
  • Treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS) are being developed for patients with progressive MS through clinical trials

Our physicians are dedicated to training the next generation of neurology clinicians to provide compassionate and innovative care to those with neurological disorders through teaching and research.  This “bench to bedside” philosophy ensures the most advanced personalized clinical care.
