Our training program is the second-oldest in the United States, and our physicians are leaders in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery research. UC Health Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures.
Our exceptional surgeons, recognized by Best Doctors in America and Top Doctors in Cincinnati, are faculty members at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and train medical students and residents in these highly regarded programs. UC Health surgeons have trained most of the oral and maxillofacial surgeons practicing in Greater Cincinnati today. Our surgeons also conduct seminars for their peers from the region.

UC Health Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provides inpatient care at UC Health University Hospital and UC Health Holmes Hospital, and outpatient care at the UC Health Physicians Offices in Clifton. University Hospital is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the Cincinnati region and this provides our surgeons with immediate access to advanced technology and physicians in various other specialties for consultation when necessary.

As an academic-based institution, education and research are paramount to our success and our residency program is the second-oldest training program for oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the country. Our surgeons are involved in groundbreaking research that contributes to the science of oral and maxillofacial surgery. We’ve set standards in outpatient care for facial trauma, and landmark findings in the use of anesthesia in an outpatient setting with patients who are obese. Currently, we’re studying the use of pre-emptive pain relief. This research could affect oral and maxillofacial surgical practices around the world.
Robert Marciani, DMD, Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, is a chief editor or co-editor of several textbooks that are considered necessary to the education of future surgeons in this specialty. Worldwide, oral and maxillofacial surgery students read Dr. Marciani’s work and are aware of his contributions to current practice, particularly in dental facial deformity repair, trauma and anesthesia.
